Heating and Cooling Systems of a Batch Reactor

The batch reactor is a generic term for a type of vessel that is commonly used in the process industries. Its name is somewhat misleading because vessels of this type are used for a wide range of process operations including solids dissolution, product mixing, chemical reactions, batch distillation, crystallisation, liquid/liquid extraction, and polymerization. In some cases, they are not referred to as reactors, but rather by a name that reflects the function they play (such as crystallizer, or bioreactor).

Ablaze Glass Works is the leading Batch reactor manufacturer in Vadodara.

A batch reactor is typically made up of a storage tank with an agitator and an integrated heating/cooling system. The size of these vessels can range from less than 1 litre to more than 15,000 litres. They are commonly made of steel, stainless steel, glass-lined steel, glass, or an exotic alloy. Liquids and solids are typically charged through connections in the reactor's top cover. Vapors and gases can also escape through the top connections. Typically, liquids are discharged from the bottom.

The batch reactor's benefits stem from its adaptability. A single vessel can carry out a series of operations without having to break containment. This is especially useful when working with toxic or highly potent compounds.

Heating & Cooling System:

During the processing of products in batch reactors, heat is usually liberated or absorbed. Heat is produced even when stored liquids are stirred. Heat must be added or removed by a cooling jacket or cooling pipe to keep the reactor contents at the desired temperature. Batch reactors are heated and cooled using heating/cooling coils or external jackets. To add or remove heat, heat transfer fluid flows through the jacket or coils.

External cooling jackets are generally preferred in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries because they make the vessel easier to clean. Three parameters define the performance of these jackets:

Response time taken in modifying the jacket temperature

Ability to maintain the uniformity of jacket temperature

Ability to keep the jacket temperature stable.

Ablaze Glass Works is a noted manufacturer and supplier of Automated batch reactors in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.

It could be argued that the heat transfer coefficient is an important parameter as well. However, large batch reactors with external cooling jackets have severe heat transfer constraints due to their design. Even with ideal heat transfer conditions, it is difficult to achieve more than 100 watts/litre. Continuous reactors, on the other hand, can provide cooling capacities in excess of 10,000 Watts/litre. There are better solutions than batch reactors for processes with extremely high heat loads.

A quick temperature control response and uniform jacket heating and cooling are especially important for crystallisation processes or operations where the product or process is extremely temperature sensitive. Batch reactor cooling jackets are classified into following types:

     Single external jacket.

     Half coil jacket.

     Constant flux cooling jacket.
