Advantages of Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE)
The Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE) is used to
concentrate, distill, strip, dehydrate, and deodorize heat-sensitive or viscous
goods. The apparatus is capable of handling a wide range of feed compositions
ranging from 1% to over 95% concentration. WFE provides various benefits, which
are listed in the table below. The action is continuous with a single pass; the
thin film is produced and renewed by self-cleaning continuous contact wipers.
This type of process increases product production while avoiding residue and
colour buildup. It has an inbuilt condenser (optional) that reduces pressure
loss while maintaining a vacuum.

Slotted Wiper Blades:
For improved heat transfer, unique
wiper blade designs effectively spread the material in a thin film on the wall.
To reduce residence time, blades move the product down the heated wall in a
matter of seconds.

Low Rotor Speed:

The WFE design's high heat transfer
coefficient necessitates lower rotor speeds, which considerably extend the
service life of the wiper blades, mechanical seal, and drive bearing.

No Bottom Steady Bearing:
Unlike a standard fixed clearance
evaporator, the WFE rotor is totally supported by the top drive and bearing
assembly, which is affixed to the WFE top cover and main shell flange. This is
accomplished through the use of the robust overhung WFE design. Because there
is no bottom steady bearing, no flux oil is required, which is crucial when the
product is non-volatile.

Low Horsepower Requirements:
The low rotor speed cuts horsepower
requirements greatly. This results in significant cost savings, especially when
compared to a fixed clearance evaporator of the same size.

Expandable WFE Sizes:
Additional thermal sections can be
placed above the original thermal section at your plant site for select models
to give expanded capacity for existing WFEs. Rotor Removal Made Simple In 30
minutes or less, any size WFE rotor may be removed and reinstalled. Simply
detach the motor leads, feed line, and bolts, then remove the rotor out of the
shell as a single unit. This enables quick and easy inspection, maintenance,
and cleaning.

Internal Condenser:
The absence of a bottom stable
bearing in the WFE design allows for the installation of an internal condenser.
When compared to external condensers, WFEs with internal condensers have less
pressure loss, allowing for high-vacuum operation. The high vacuum, combined
with the proximity of the condenser surface area to the heated wall, results in
superior separations, complete condensation, and sub-cooling.

Efficient Entrainment Separators:
Full-length entrainment separators
built specifically for normal and high-vacuum operation effectively remove
entrained droplets from the vapour stream and increase the purity of the
distillate product.

High-Vacuum Operation:
The WFE is a high-vacuum design that
can function with vacuums as low as one micron (.001 torr). Deep vacuum
operation reduces operating temperatures and prevents thermal deterioration.

Bottoms Outlet:
For viscous materials with high
melting temperatures, the WFE bottom head can be heated, and extruder blades
can be used to help discharge heavy material mechanically.

Low Maintenance:
Any WFE manufacturing company would
normally suggest only one downtime per year for 1-2 days for inspection and
maintenance, depending on the application. Mechanical seals are designed to
last for many years. Because there is no bottom bearing, there is no need for
costly maintenance.
